Trees along the Chapman rd path

It would be great if there was a really nice line of trees planted along chapman rd north of the marina. The walking path lacks shade and the roots of the trees may help in the long term to stabilise the beach there. The trees will need to be fenced, watered and protected from vandals.

Q1: What is the change you want to make?

  • Plant some trees along Chapman rd between the north of the marina and St Georges park.
  • If the trees get planted this year there may even be a walking path still there for them to shade. But if the progress made on tree planting stays in the go slow basket it will be too late.
  • Probably a variety of short coastal gums and sheaoks.
  • The main idea is to provide shade, some wind protection and make it a more appealing natural area.
  • There may be an added bonus that the roots from a decent planting of trees could reduce erosion.

Q2: Why is this important to your community?

  • The community would also find this idea important as a means of promoting a healthy, environmentally sustainable and aesthetically pleasing image of Geraldton walkways.
  • Particularly if occassional seating was also provided so the older people and those with young children could take breaks in their walk.
  • Trees will provide a more 'private' barrier between people wanting to exercise and people driving past, it will make the pathway more attractive and inviting.
  • It would also provide shade for users of the path, both locals and tourists. Which would increase the use of the path.
  • All ages utilise this path. It is such a lovely location to go for a walk but some people may be deterred by the lack of shade and how exposed the walkers/joggers are to the traffic.

Q3: How can this change be made?

  • Use Arbour day to plant native trees and shrubs in conjunction with any other groups we can get trees/plants from or who can help.
  • Contact the Men of Trees society. Include this is Andrew Outwaithes initiative for '1000000 trees'. Request help from parks & gardens.
  • May need to get in contact with coastcare?
  • Talk to the city to see what they can provide in the way of resources needed
  • Can they help with the site preperation ripping of the tree lines and perhaps some fencing

Q4: Where do we start?

  • Can we organise to meet with Kim Trotter from the city?
  • Kim Trotter (Manager Parks and Facilities)is happy to meet with interested persons to discuss the proposal of trees along Chapman Rd.
  • I think this would be necessary before any further discussion to find out what the City will/will not approve and/or assist with.

I support indigenous plantings along the Chapman Road pathway. This would be attractive and healthy to people and native indigenous biota and would help strengthen the coastline against some of the effects of global warming.
