Geraldton Groyne Merkins

The groynes along town beach and the marina are not very appealing and have not been designed to be people friendly. However they have a big impact on the visual amenity of the town. I feel this could be addressed if some simple shapes and sculputres (perhaps made from shade cloth for example) are created along the groynes to make distinctive shapes, for example the shape of a whale or a dragon sitting in the water.

Also lighting in the evenings may be onther idea where the lights are placed to create shapes of boats/animals when veiwed from different locations on the foreshore etc.

I feel that if we can establish some mounting points along the groynes, the shapes could be regularly changed to create different ideas to reflect the seasons and festivities in the City.

Q1: What is the change you want to make?

  • Improving the look of these groynes could become a tourist attraction if done right. Geraldton needs simple solutions like this.

Q2: Why is this important to your community?

  • What does your community value? (Check against the different reports and priorities from the 2029 and Beyond project)
  • Who will benefit?
  • Who will be worse off?
  • Have you sought the involvement of everyone affected by this change?

Q3: How can this change be made?

  • What are the individual steps/changes that need to be made to achieve your end goal?
  • What resources are required?
  • How can we get them?

Q4: Where do we start?

  • Who should take responsibility for implementing each of the changes?
  • What could you achieve in the next 3 months that would demonstrate progress towards the change?
  • Who has the authority to approve the change(s)?
  • Who would need to apply for grants or funding?

Alan Bradley

I think in the long term unless we can make the groynes around Geraldton attractive and an integral part of our coastal lifestyle the City will struggle with the future issues it faces at having these strucutres along the coast.

We need some simple cost effective ideas to have these strucutres enjoyed and as people friendly as possible.
